Don't lose the chance to develop YOUR immersive performance
OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES FOR THE CREATION OF PERFORMATIVE WORKS, INCLUDING WORKS BASED ON AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
Project xx1 offers young artists and small collectives the opportunity to develop a performance concept based on theatre, music, or dance, to be staged in the immersive space of Area xx1.
The open call provides artistic residencies, production support, and opportunities to present original dramaturgical concepts to the public. Preference will be given to projects incorporating immersive elements, such as:
* Interactive audio guides
* Sensory theatre
* One-to-one theatre
* Free-roaming experiences
* Role-playing
* Explorations and investigations
* Alternative endings
* Audience agency
The call also accepts performance proposals that do not involve active audience participation. However, works incorporating participatory mechanisms will be given priority.
Although interaction may often take playful forms, audience-participation proposals will be assessed and selected on the basis of their artistic merit, rather than solely on their “game-like” dimension. Interactive mechanisms will be evaluated as integral elements of a work of art, rather than as ends in themselves.
Eligible projects include original works that have never been presented to the public, as well as performances previously presented as works in progress or in non-participatory formats.
For example, existing conventional stage productions may apply where the artists wish to develop them further by incorporating audience-participation mechanisms.
Projects based on any performing-art discipline are eligible, including theatre, dance, and music.
Selected projects must take into account the distinctive scenographic features of Area xx1 and adapt their performances to the existing space and set-up.
COMPETITION
The projects selected at the sole discretion of the jury will have the opportunity to develop and stage their work with the following support:
- A 30–50-hour artistic residency at Area xx1, to be arranged according to the availability of the venue and the artists
- Technical support, including lighting, audio, costumes, and props
- Supervision and support in dramaturgy, directing, and the development of interactive mechanisms
- Promotional and communication support
The residency projects will be presented to the jury and the public, who will determine the winning projects.
Each artist’s or group’s performance may run for between 20 and 60 minutes.
The projects receiving the highest scores from the expert jury and the public will be invited to present their performances at Area xx1 for a minimum of three performances. The artists will receive 70% of the box-office revenue.
STAGES
STAGE I — Selection
The first stage will consist of selecting the finalists, whether individuals or groups, based on the projects submitted through the online form by 10 August 2026.
STAGE II — Development
Each selected project will be invited to take part in a 30–50-hour artistic residency at Area xx1, beginning on 24 August 2026.
STAGE III — Presentation
The performances developed during the residencies, each lasting between 20 and 60 minutes, will be presented live to an expert jury and the public during one or more evenings taking place between 20 and 30 September 2026.
STAGE IV — Performances
The winning productions will be included in the Area xx1 programme from **October to December 2026**.

Applications must be received by 10 August 2026. Applications must include:
A completed online project form, available HERE.
The following documents must then be sent by email to contact@projectxx1.org:
* An identity document belonging to the artist or the representative of the group
* The CVs of all participating artists
* Proof of bank transfer of the €30 application fee to the account held by Project xx1:
